Nebraska announced a major hire on Wednesday morning, welcoming back former Husker football player Trev Alberts to be the school’s new athletic director.
Alberts, who has held the same position at University of Nebraska Omaha since 2009, will replace Bill Moos, who stepped down last month. He becomes the fourth athletic director at Nebraska since the school joined the Big Ten in 2011.
“It is such a tremendous honor to have this opportunity to lead Husker athletics,” Alberts said in a statement, per ESPN. “UNL has incredibly talented coaches and student-athletes, and a fan base like no other program in the country. The future of Big Red is bright. I can’t wait to join the Husker athletics team and get going.”
Alberts once proved to be a star on the football field when he attended Nebraska in the 1990’s. He was a consensus All-American and the Dick Butkus Award winner in 1993 before the Indianapolis Colts chose him with the No. 5 overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft.
Alberts will now return to Lincoln where he’ll need to quickly meet the expectations of a devout fanbase. With Nebraska’s recent struggles in football, the former Cornhusker will need to show a commitment to turning things around, and fast.
The reception to the Alberts hire was fairly mixed among Nebraska fans on Wednesday. Some didn’t want to jump to conclusions and wished the 50-year-old the best in his new role, while others were a bit more skeptical about the school’s choice.

There’s zero reason to believe Trev Alberts will work because he “knows Nebraska” or “is family.”
If it works it’s because he manages political infighting, hires successful individuals, Nebraska football wins and he helps steward Nebraska into a new age of college athletics.

my initial reaction of Trev Alberts becoming the next AD is….
too profane for even twitter to handle
i’m going for a walk in the woods
is there any former 90s guy who still needs money thrown at them while we still have it?

Wow, there are so many psychics on social media who already know exactly how Nebraska's new AD will do here! Neat! I can't predict the future so I'm just gonna go with:

“I love this place (pauses, emotional). Sorry about that. Didn’t know that was going to happen. I love the University of Nebraska.” – New Huskers AD Trev Alberts

Alberts navigated the AD role admirably at UNO and helped facilitate the program’s rise from Division II to Division I. However, leading a school like Nebraska is much taller task that he’ll need to show he’s up for early on in his tenure.
Alberts will get the chance to prove himself right away with the upcoming college football season. Scott Frost and the Cornhuskers have struggled to maintain pace in the Big Ten over the last few years, so 2021 will be a pivotal year for the program.
If Alberts can elevate the Nebraska football team as soon as this fall, he’ll start off on the right foot with the Huskers faithful.
