Dwayne Wade famously went to Marquette, where he is likely the greatest player in program history. In 2003, he almost single-handedly led the Golden Eagles to the Final Four.

Luckily for him, his alma mater doesn't have a football program. That was big when it came to wooing his wife Gabrielle Union.

Union is a Nebraska native, and a life long, diehard Huskers fan. Based on a recent interview, things may not have worked out if Wade wasn't willing to adopt the Huskers himself.

Gabrielle Union recently appeared on The Late Late Show With James Corden, and told the story of why Dwyane Wade has to embrace her Nebraska fandom.

Essentially, it was a major way that he could win her father over.

Via the Omaha World-Herald:

Union said her father was at first skeptical about Wade.

“I had been married before — spoiler alert — and I had to write some checks after that one,” Union said, “So my dad was watching the wallet, and he was like ‘What do you want with her? She’s got her own life, she’s got her own house, she’s got her own stuff, what are you bringing to the table?’”

Union said her father made him a deal: “If you’ll commit to being a Nebraska Cornhusker fan, I’ll let you in the family.”

“We have not missed a home opener, yet.” Union said before cheering, “GO BIG RED!”

As Union said, the couple has been a presence at Husker football games. Nebraska basketball also offered a scholarship to his son, Zaire Wade, last summer, though the status of that offer is unclear with the recent coaching change.

Given the excitement around the Scott Frost era entering year two, and Wade might've gotten in ahead of the bandwagon at a good time.
