The Miami Hurricanes were dealt a blow to their secondary earlier in the week, when junior safety Derrick Smith announced that he'll enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Smith released a statement about his decision on social media. He made it clear that he's no longer part of the Hurricanes, saying "To the Miami Nation effective today, I would like to inform you, I am no longer on the University of Miami football team."

With the former three-star recruit in the transfer portal, it appears there are four contenders for his services.

The four programs in the mix for Smith are Florida, Illinois, Nebraska and Texas. All these options present him the chance to face top competition.

It'd be quite intriguing to see Smith go from Miami to Florida. The possibility of that happening might be high considering that he's from Orange Park.

Smith revealed the four potential transfer destinations on Twitter. He also stated that he'll make his decision by next week.

Over the last two seasons, Smith has appeared in 25 games. The six-foot-two safety only had 24 tackles during that span, but he also contributed on special teams.

The timing of Smith's decision shows that he wants to find a new home before the season officially begins.
