A top program's AD has been fired.
After a difficult start to the football season, and just days after re-signing Mike Riley to a contract extension, Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst has been fired.
According to a release from Nebraska Chancellor Ronnie Green, Nebraska has ended Eichorst's employment effective immediately and has begun to look for a replacement.
Eichorst joined Nebraska in 2012, and has $1.2 million remaining on his contract that was supposed to run through 2019.
From the release:
“Shawn has led Nebraska Athletics in many positive ways, but those efforts have not translated into on-field performance,” Chancellor Ronnie Green said. “Our fans and our student-athletes deserve leadership that drives the highest levels of competitiveness, as well as excellence across all facets of Husker Athletics.
I want to sincerely thank Shawn for his dedication to and care for our student-athletes, and for his commitment to their success here at Nebraska, and in life,” Green said. “He has positively influenced countless lives at this university, and I wish him and his family the very best going forward.”
Nebraska is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. ET today to speak about the shocking move. An interim athletic director has not been named, but Green says one will be decided while the university searches for a long-term replacement.
