One of the most bizarre stories of the year happened last Friday, when Nebraska DE Jack Gangwish tweeted that he tried taking a selfie with a raccoon, but the raccoon bit him in the leg, so Gangwish killed it with a wrench.
Now, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are getting involved. PETA is predictably upset with the way things went down with Gangwish and the raccoon, and according to the Lincoln Journal Star, the organization wants Gangwish to be punished for his decision.
National animal rights activists are pushing UNL’s athletic director to demand discipline against a Husker football player who tried to take a selfie with a raccoon, then beat the animal to death after it bit him.
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk also reportedly sent a letter to Nebraska AD Shawn Eichorst, saying "Student athletes are set up to be role models, so it's critical for the university to send its players the message that bullying and abusing anyone is unacceptable."
