There are still a few weeks to go before the Associate Press releases its college basketball preseason Top 10. With most of the top recruiting prospects now off the board, rosters are getting finalized and some outlets are already putting their lists together.
Earlier this week, Athlon Sports released its Preseason Top 10 ranking and had a number of surprises in store. Rather than give presumptive No. 1 Michigan State the top spot, Athlon gave the position to SEC titan Kentucky.
Athlon quickly explained that the return of EJ Montgomery from the draft pool along with a very strong recruiting class were key factors in the decision.
Here is Athlon Sports’ Preseason Top 10 ranking:
- 10. Texas Tech
- 9. Gonzaga
- 8. Seton Hall
- 7. North Carolina
- 6. Louisville
- 5. Ohio State
- 4. Duke
- 3. Villanova
- 2. Michigan State
- 1. Kentucky
Plenty of NCAA Tournament blue bloods made the top ten, though the list is certainly not without controversy.
A few notable exceptions from the list are defending NCAA Champion Virginia, as well as recruiting giant Memphis.
Meanwhile, a top-five selection that may surprise quite a few people was the addition of Ohio State. The Buckeyes are bringing back a core of players that went 20-15 overall last year, and scored an upset win over Iowa State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
The 2019-20 season may not have a super-team like last year’s Duke squad, but there are certainly plenty of surprises in store for us.
