Desmond Howard Called Out Ryan Day For 'Thin-Skinned' Comments About Lou Holtz
ESPN analyst Desmond Howard was not a fan of Ohio State coach Ryan Day's postgame rant about Lou Holtz last weekend.
During this Saturday's edition of "College GameDay," Howard criticized Day for being so bothered by Holtz's comments.
"The last thing he should've done was come after Lou Holtz," Howard said. "Enjoy the moment, talk about the success of your team, but don't come after an elderly old man.
"I was turned off by it. I thought that it was thin-skinned, they [Day and Washington State coach Jake Dickert] were hypersensitive, and it wasn't their best moments at all."
This rivalry started when Holtz questioned Day's track record at Ohio State.
"You look at Coach Day, and he has lost to Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Michigan twice," Holtz said. "And everybody that beats him does so because they’re more physical than Ohio State. And I think Notre Dame will take that same approach. You take this message to Ohio State. You tell ’em they better bring their lunch because it’s going to be a full day’s work."
After Ohio State defeated Notre Dame in thrilling fashion, Day called out Holtz on national TV.
"I'd like to know where Lou Holtz is right now," Day responded. "What he said about our team, I cannot believe. This is a tough team right here. We're proud to be from Ohio. It's always been Ohio against the world, and it'll continue to be Ohio against the world."
Day has received a lot of criticism for the way he handled this situation, there's no doubt about it. That being said, it's pretty evident he was trying to motivate his players.
