There’s still a good six months to go before the start of 2020 college football season. Spring training camps don’t even open for another few weeks. But that hasn’t stopped ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) from dishing out some early rankings for the upcoming year.
Last year we saw nine teams in the Big Ten Conference achieve bowl eligibility. But the Ohio State Buckeyes were the cream of the crop, going 13-0 before getting knocked out in the College Football Playoff by Clemson.
Heading into 2020, ESPN’s FPI projects another strong crop of Big Ten teams to set the pace. The Big Ten has the second-most schools ranked in the top 25 of any FBS conference with six.
But with Indiana (No. 26) and Iowa (No. 27) just outside, the Big Ten has the most teams in the top 30.
Here is ESPN’s preseason FPI ranking of the teams in the Big Ten Conference.
2. Ohio State
5. Penn State
58. Michigan State
The black sheep of the conference is clearly Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights went 2-10 last year and have a grand total of nine wins in the past four years combined. Only Kansas is ranked lower than them among Power Five schools.
But it seems pretty clear that Ohio State will once again be the team to beat in the Big Ten. With star QB Justin Fields going into his junior – and possibly final – year, the Buckeyes will be dangerous.
Who do you think is the best team in the Big Ten Conference?
