The last thing the Saints were expecting was for Drew Brees to miss significant time with an injury this season. But an injured thumb will sideline the veteran quarterback for the time being.
As a result, New Orleans has had to make the necessary roster changes.
There’s nothing great about injuries. But with an open roster spot, a former collegiate star will get another shot with the Saints.
New Orleans has signed former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett to the practice squad.

This isn’t the first time Barrett has spent time with New Orleans. In fact, most of his career has been spent with the organization. Barrett signed with the Saints in May of 2018 as an undrafted free agent. He fought to be the team’s third-string quarterback, but Taysom Hill won the job.
Later that year he was waived, but signed to the Saints’ practice squad.
That led to a cycle of time on and off the New Orleans practice squad for a total of 23 transactions. On August 1, 2019, he was waived by the Saints again. The Seahawks signed him a few days later, but his time in Seattle didn’t last very long.
Now, Barrett gives the Saints another option at quarterback if needed. For now, Teddy Bridgewater will start with Hill backing him up.
New Orleans goes on the road this week for a contest with the Seahawks.
