Report: NFL Teams Interested In Greg Schiano As Defensive Coordinator

Ohio State's Greg Schiano.

Greg Schiano/Ohio State.

Greg Schiano may leave Ohio State, but it probably won't be for a college head coaching job.

Greg Schiano went through the wringer earlier this year, when fan outcry effectively sabotaged his deal to become the head coach of Tennessee football. After that, it looked like Schiano was destined to stay at Ohio State as defensive coordinator for at least one more season.

However, there may be a chance that the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach could jump back to the pros.

Bruce Feldman reports that NFL folks are very interesting in bringing Greg Schiano on as defensive coordinator.

It is unclear where Schiano could hypothetically land. The Cardinals, Colts, Giants, and Lions are all still looking to fill head coaching vacancies, and there are other new head coaches with defensive coordinator spots to potentially fill, including the Bears. A jump back to the NFL could also make sense for Schiano, who may have trouble with other college openings after the Tennessee fiasco, which (fairly or unfairly) connected him back to the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State.

If Schiano does leave, Ohio State is still in pretty good shape. The Buckeyes just poached defensive coordinator Alex Grinch from Washington State, and retains another co-defensive coordinator in Kerry Coombs.
