Houston announced this evening that it's raising Tom Herman's annual contract to $3 million, a clear attempt to hold onto the star 40-year-old coach.
Herman, a former Ohio State offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer, has been with the Cougars for just one season, but he's off to a 10-0 start. His name is popping up on every coaching wish list imaginable for programs - USC, South Carolina, Miami - in need of a head coach. He'll be pursued heavily this offseason (and every offseason he remains in Houston).
Herman's $3 million salary would be the 28th-highest in the country this season, per USA TODAY's database, and by far the highest among non-Power Five schools. His base salary was $1.35 million this season, so the Cougars are more than doubling what they're paying him.
Get your checkbooks ready, Power 5 teams wanting to hire Herman. It's going to take a lot to pry him from Houston.
