Jason Garrett Updates Ezekiel Elliott's Hamstring Injury

Ezekiel Elliott suffered his first NFL injury earlier this week.

Jason Garrett provided a short update to the injury to the Cowboys' rookie running back at practice today.

Elliott, taken No. 4 overall by Dallas in the 2016 NFL Draft, tweaked his right hamstring near the end of practice on Tuesday. The Cowboys had an off-day on Wednesday, so Elliott was able to get some rest, but the team returned to the practice field today. Elliott is sitting out.

Garrett says Elliott is "day to day."

Elliott is expected to start at running back for the Cowboys. Two of Dallas' other running backs - Lance Dunbar (knee) and Darren McFadden (elbow) - are also currently out with injuries.

Former Washington Redskins' running back Alfred Morris has been taking first-team reps with Elliott sidelined.

The Cowboys are currently in training camp and open the preseason on Saturday, Aug. 13 against the Los Angeles Rams. The game is set to kick off at 8 p.m. E.T. on ESPN.

Dallas opens the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 11 against the New York Giants. That game is set to kick off at 4:25 p.m. E.T. on FOX.
