Watching at home, Ryan Day probably doesn’t want Justin Fields used as a lead blocker too much. You can’t knock the Ohio State star quarterback for his effort today though.
The Buckeyes are handling business against Big Ten East rival Michigan State today. This game has extra significance, as Ohio State needs this and next week’s game against Michigan to be played to reach the Big Ten Championship at 6-0, barring a change to the rules by Big Ten athletic directors. In any case, Ohio State may be dealing with a much smaller data set than other schools for the College Football Playoff.
Style points matter, which the Buckeyes are well aware of. Late in the third quarter, they lead Michigan State 38-7. Fields made sure that one of those touchdowns happened, with a spectacular effort on a long run by Trey Sermon.
Earlier in the third quarter, Sermon broke off an impressive 64-yard touchdown run to push the score to 35-0. He may have been able to outrun the Michigan State defense no matter what. When Fields saw the room he had, he sprinted down the field, and threw one late block on the final Spartans defensive back, making sure that Sermon got to the end zone.

Again, Sermon might’ve gotten to the pylon without Justin Fields, but if you’re a Buckeye fan, you have to love your superstar, future first-round pick quarterback doing whatever he can to get the score there, even in a blowout.
Bouncing back from a rough game in the close win over Indiana, Fields has had a solid game so far, completing 16-of-23 for 158 yards and a touchdown throw to Garrett Wilson. Like the rest of the offense, he’s found more success on the ground against the Spartans.
