College football’s rivalry week certainly didn’t disappoint. Last Saturday helped in sifting potential playoff teams, giving a much clearer picture of who the real contenders are.
With rivalry Saturday in the books, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has unveiled his top five teams of the week. The Ohio State Buckeyes top the list after a dominant performance against the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor.
The Buckeyes put together another blowout win against their most hated rival. Ohio State has now won eight straight in the rivalry series, earning the top spot in Herbstreit’s top five teams of the week in the process.
Here’s the other teams that made the cut in Herbstreit’s list this week:
- Ohio State
- Central Michigan
Ohio State’s beat-down of Michigan was impressive. But it’s a bit surprising Auburn didn’t earn the top spot.
The Tigers’ stunning upset victory of Alabama eliminated the Crimson Tide from College Football Playoff contention. It was without a doubt the most entertaining game of the week – and has had the most subsequent impact.
Virginia checks in at No. 3 after taking down Virginia Tech – and earning a spot in the ACC Championship as a result.

Wisconsin beat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 38-17, also earning a spot in its conference championship.
Central Michigan dominated Toledo in a 49-7 victory. The Chippewas won just one game last year. But went 8-4 this season and will play in the MAC Championship this week.
Rivalry week provided more clarity on which teams are true contenders for the national title. This week’s slate of conference championships will provide the final opportunity for teams to convince the playoff committee.
