Ohio State's Urban Meyer, Athletic Director Gene Smith Comment On The 4 Suspended Buckeye Players

Ohio State will be without four key players against Virginia Tech. The Buckeyes announced today that Joey Bosa, Jalin Marshall, Corey Smith and Dontre Wilson have been suspended for the opening contest against the Hokies.

ESPN's Joe Schad is reporting the suspension is for "marijuana and academics."

For the first time since the news was broken, Urban Meyer and athletic director Gene Smith have commented on the suspension.

Doug Lesmerises of talked to Urban Meyer at Big Ten Media Days.

"It's a college mistake, whether it's social or academic, whatever it is, it's not a character indictment," Meyer told the Northeast Ohio Media Group and Canton Repository as he walked in a hallway at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago.

How has Meyer been dealing with them?

"With honesty," Meyer said. "It's not the first time a program has dealt with stuff. We try to educate and create a culture where stuff is not part of it. It's been a great summer and great year in a lot of regards."

The task against the Hokies got tougher with this news, though.

"Whether you have a pulled hamstring or sprained ankle or stuff, we recruited well, we expect to move forward," Meyer said. "It's disappointing. We've known about it for a while, though, and as our players would say, go as hard as you can and move forward."

Meyer will likely have more to say on the matter at Big Ten Media Days this afternoon.

Ohio State is set to face Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Sept. 7.
