Expectations are going to be very high for Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields now that he's the team's starter. But one Buckeyes coach pointed out a fact about Fields that should give him a significant leg up this year.
In a recent interview via Saturday Tradition, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson pointed to Fields' speed as a factor people are not considering. He revealed that Fields is about as fast as any other quarterback he's ever seen.
“When he takes off running, he’s maybe as fast as I’ve seen at quarterback."
Fields' speed is fairly well documented. He rushed for over 2,100 yards and 30 touchdowns on 310 carries in high school. Per 247Sports he also ran a 4.51 40-yard dash in high school.
Even in his freshman year with Georgia, Fields demonstrated some top-end speed. He rushed for 266 yards and four touchdowns on 42 carries.
But Saturday Tradition noted that Ohio State head coach Ryan Day doesn't plan to have Fields take off too often.
Last year, Ohio State starter Dwayne Haskins didn't run the ball much - and didn't even need to really.
But for the Buckeyes to have a quarterback who adds the extra running dimension to his game, Fields could have a very special season.
