It seems like Ryan Day’s first duty as Ohio State head coach has been to raid the staffs of other Big Ten programs for assistant coaching hires.
First, Day poached Greg Mattison and Al Washington from Michigan. Now, he’s added another staff member from a Big Ten East program.
According to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman, Ohio State is hiring Maryland’s Matt Barnes as its new special teams coordinator and assistant secondary coach.
Barnes has spent three the last three seasons as Maryland’s linebackers coach, and he added the responsibility of special teams coordinator in 2018.

Prior to Maryland, Barnes spent the 2015 season at Michigan. He was at Florida from 2012-14.
Barnes began his coaching career at Delaware Valley College in 2009.
Ohio State finished the 2018 season with a 13-1 record, a Big Ten title and a win in the Rose Bowl.
