The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry will feature a new head coaching matchup moving forward. Urban Meyer vs. Jim Harbaugh is out and Ryan Day vs. Jim Harbaugh is in.
Meyer, of course, retired at the end of the 2018 college football season. He was replaced by Day, who served on his staff for multiple seasons, and led the Buckeyes’ program on an interim basis at the start of the ’18 season while Meyer served his suspension.
Day and Harbaugh won’t have a friendly relationship (probably, anyway), but they do have to at least be familiar with one another.
Details of the first phone conversation between Day and Harbaugh has been revealed and, well, it had to be a little awkward.
Day called Harbaugh to get his permission to hire a couple of his top assistant coaches.
“Like any time when you’re hiring somebody, you want to call their boss and talk to them and, obviously, get their permission before you address them,” Day said on National Signing Day, per the Toledo Blade. “So I went ahead and did that. Didn’t really know Coach up until that conversation with him.”
Day ended up hiring Greg Mattison, a longtime Michigan coach who will lead Day’s defensive staff, and Al Washington, a Columbus native who will coach the linebackers.
Ohio State and Michigan are set to meet in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 30.
It should be a fun one.
