Ohio State’s board of trustees, after 12 hours of deliberation, has announced it is suspending head coach Urban Meyer for the first three games of the 2018 season. School AD Gene Smith has also been suspended.
Immediately following the press release, Ohio State held a press conference in which reporters were allowed to ask questions. Meyer’s answer to one of them is going viral.
Meyer was asked what kind of “message” he’d have for Courtney Smith – the ex-wife of former wide receivers coach Zach Smith. Meyer’s response left many wanting a bit more.
“I’m sorry we’re in this situation” was his response. It’s not getting rave reviews.

Urban Meyer probably should’ve prepared a little better for a possible question about what message he’d like to send to Courtney Smith. Because “I’m sorry we’re in this situation” is a pretty lousy message for Courtney Smith.

Urban on what he’d say to Courtney Smith: “I’m sorry we’re in this situation.” WTF?

"My message is to everyone — I'm sorry we're in this situation."

Urban Meyer saying, “I’m sorry we’re in this situation” when asked what he’d say to Courtney Smith is really something else. I mean, wow. And considering he and Ohio State had weeks to rehearse this show, it’s been nothing short of a circus.

It’s impossible to know what Meyer believes happened between Zach Smith and his wife – but it seems clear that he does not want to express any kind of sympathy for her in public. Make of that what you will.
Meyer, during his suspension, will miss his team’s games against Oregon State, Rutgers and TCU.
