The Urban Meyer-Ohio State saga went to another level of drama on Saturday, as it was reported that Texas head coach Tom Herman was the one who leaked news of the allegations against now-fired assistant coach Zach Smith to college football insider Brett McMurphy.
These allegations have since been denied by both the Texas head coach and his wife, Michelle Herman. McMurphy has also said that it isn't true.
"I have never revealed my sources in my nearly four decade journalistic career & I am not going to start now. However, I will say unequivocally that Tom Herman was not my source," McMurphy tweeted.
Jeff Snook, the reporter who broke the news of Herman's alleged role, was able to get a comment from Urban Meyer's wife, Shelley Meyer.
Shelley Meyer, who allegedly texted with the ex-wife of Zach Smith regarding the allegations, was unable to comment on the record, but she did thank Snook for pursuing both sides of the story.
“I really do appreciate you doing your job with integrity and checking on all the points, unlike some others,” Shelley Meyer said, via a text message. “I just can’t comment and I am very sorry. Thank u.”
This is an ongoing saga and it's unclear if anything reported on Saturday - even if it's true - will actually have a bearing on what happens to Urban Meyer and Ohio State's football program.
The investigation into Urban Meyer and the program, regarding the handling of domestic violence accusations against Zach Smith, is expected to be completed soon.
