The Buckeyes might not control their own fate.
The latest College Football Playoff rankings were unveiled tonight, and the Ohio State Buckeyes checked in at No. 8. Wisconsin, Ohio State’s opponent in Saturday’s Big Ten title game, was ranked No. 4.
With a 10-2 regular season record, some were wondering if OSU could make the playoff simply by beating Wisconsin, or if they would need some help elsewhere. Considering one-loss Alabama was ranked fifth, and the Crimson Tide aren’t even in the SEC Championship Game, that’s not a good omen for the Buckeyes.
Another thing that is a bad sign is this stat. In the first three year of the CFP, no team outside the top 5 in the second-to-last rankings has made the final four-team field.
In the previous 3 years, no eventual playoff team has ever been ranked outside the Top 5 in the second-to-last release.

Can Ohio State buck this trend, no pun intended? We’ll see.
