Al Pacino Will Play Joe Paterno In A New HBO Movie

Al Pacino is set to play Joe Paterno, per a report.

According to Variety, Al Pacino will play former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in an upcoming HBO movie. The film will be directed by Barry Levinson, who also recently directed The Wizard of Lies - which was based on Bernie Madoff.

Here's the official description of the movie, per Variety:

“After becoming the winningest coach in college football history, Joe Paterno is embroiled in Penn State’s Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal, challenging his legacy and forcing him to face questions of institutional failure on behalf of the victims.”

There is no release date yet for the movie.

Paterno, who coached from 1966-2011, compiled a 409-136-3 record with two national titles. In 2011, following the arrest of Jerry Sandusky, Paterno was relieved of his coaching duties. He died from complications of lung cancer treatment in January of 2012.
