Michigan State has caused James Franklin plenty of grief during his first five years at Penn State. He seemed to make it clear just how much he can’t stand the Spartans with one gesture today.
A photo has been making the rounds on social media of a Penn State student named Megan McNeely wearing a Nittany Lions vest over a Michigan State shirt. Apparently, Franklin approached the student and literally gave her the shirt off his back.
In an interview with Onward State, McNeely revealed that since she was originally from Michigan, she had Spartans gear that she wore from time to time. In this particular instance, Franklin spotted her and ran over to give her a jacket to cover up the Michigan State logo.
“We were standing there talking, and I heard someone start saying, ‘Michigan State?! Why are you wearing that?’”
“I was caught off-guard and didn’t really know what to say so I jokingly covered up the MSU logo with my hands and was laughing.”
“Franklin was super nice and fun about it. He definitely made my day!”
James Franklin ensured himself some good karma when he quite literally gave one Penn State student the shirt off his back. https://t.co/0iio5JWKH1

Franklin has demonstrated tremendous team pride in working for Penn State ever since he was hired in 2014. But Michigan State has been arguably the biggest thorn in his side.
Mark Dantonio and the Spartans have beaten him in four of the last five meetings. In the last two years, they lost to Michigan State despite being the higher-ranked team.
The next Penn State-Michigan State meeting will take place on October 26 at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.
