When Penn State staged its late comeback attempt against Ohio State last weekend, it was Will Levis, and not starter Sean Clifford, in at quarterback. Clifford went down with a leg injury against the Buckeyes, as his team trailed 21-0 in the game.
Levis could not ultimately knock off OSU, but he gave Penn State a real jolt in the third quarter when he entered. He finished 6-of-11 for 57 yards and an interception, and added 34 yards on the ground, with a score.
While the numbers weren't incredible gaudy, the team looked better than when Clifford was in the game, and some openly wondered whether Levis would challenge for his job. Sean Clifford has had a strong first season as starter, so that seems unlikely.
Penn State has lowly Rutgers today, and it doesn't look like James Franklin wants to risk any further injury to his starter. He's not dressed, and Levis is running the show today.
This will be Levis' first career start. Rutgers, a 40.5-point underdog in this game, should given him a good opportunity to work on some things with the first team offense, should Clifford's injury linger into bowl season. Today's game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network. [
Sean Clifford not dressed today, so it’s the Will Levis show for Penn State against Rutgers.
