Class of 2021 running back Thad Franklin made a very early commitment, giving his pledge to Miami back in October. That came just a month or so into his sophomore high school season.
Franklin is one of 10 players already committed to Miami in 2021. The Hurricanes have the top class in the country, and no other program is close to it in that recruiting cycle as of now.
The flip side of that is that Miami has a bunch of very young recruits to hold on to now, as other programs turn more and more attention to that cycle. Franklin may have made his early pledge, but his recruitment is far from over.
This weekend, he’s heading up North to check out a Big Ten power.
Thad Franklin is making an unofficial visit to Penn State, along with Chaminade-Madonna Prep teammate Bralon Brown, who is not ranked yet, but has a PSU offer.
Franklin tweeted confirming the trip early this morning.

Franklin will likely be one of the elite running backs in the class as we get closer to the end of his high school career. He doesn’t have full rankings from every recruiting site yet, so 247Sports doesn’t have a composite score for him.
247’s internal site rankings have him as a four-star, ranked No. 170 overall, No. 10 among 2021 running backs, and No. 20 in Florida.
Penn State doesn’t have Miami’s 10 2021 commits, but they have gotten a start on the class.
Four-star wide receiver Dont’e Thornton committed to play for James Franklin back in February. The one-man class ranks 14th in the country as of today.
