Penn State defeated Maryland on Saturday, finishing the season with a 9-3 record. The Nittany Lions won't learn their bowl fate until this Sunday, but there are plenty of projections out there.

Assuming Penn State fans want to see their team in a New Year's Six game, they're going to have to root for one of their hated rivals this weekend. Nittany Lions supporters should be rooting for Ohio State on Saturday.

Penn State fans not only need to root for Ohio State to beat Northwestern, but they need to root for the Buckeyes to make the College Football Playoff too.

Why? Because if Ohio State goes to the playoff, Michigan will be in line for the Rose Bowl. Penn State, if it finishes in the top 12 of the College Football Playoff rankings, would then have a shot at the Peach Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl.

If Northwestern beats Ohio State, the Wildcats will head to the Rose Bowl. Ohio State and Michigan would then be the conference's next two best teams in pecking order.

If Ohio State beats Northwestern but doesn't wind up in the playoff, the Buckeyes will play in the Rose Bowl, and Michigan will get pushed down to a different New Year's Six bowl.

While Ohio State will be favored against Northwestern, the Buckeyes might need Oklahoma to lose to wind up in the playoff. Penn State fans will be paying attention.
