Here's How Rutgers Can Still Win The Big Ten
Yes, it is still possible.
Entering this weekend's game at Michigan, Rutgers is incredibly tied with the Wolverines for fourth place in the Big Ten East with a 2-2 record in league play. The Scarlet Knights, who didn't win a Big Ten game in 2016, are riding a two-game conference win streak after beating Illinois and Purdue.
Now, few are expecting Rutgers to walk into Ann Arbor and beat Michigan. After all, the Wolverines beat RU 78-0 in Piscataway last year and are the better team, despite recent struggles. However, Rutgers fans are excited to finally get some B1G wins under their belt and have something to feel good about.
Incredibly, the Scarlet Knights could technically still win the Big Ten East,
Here is the scenario, thanks to Reddit users infiniteMPG and topher3003:
- Rutgers must win out, beating Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State in the process
- Ohio State must lose three games
- Michigan State must lose one additional game besides against Rutgers
- Penn State must lose one additional game besides against Rutgers
- Rutgers, Michigan State, and Penn State would then be in a three-way tie atop the division with 7-2 conference records. Ohio State would be below them with three losses. Rutgers, by virtue of beating Michigan State and Penn State, would win the East via tiebreaker.
If this happens, it would probably be the biggest miracle in college football history.
Rutgers fans--full disclosure, the author of this post is an RU alum--shouldn't hold their breath waiting for this to happen. But a competitive performance at the Big House this weekend and maybe one more Big Ten win are attainable goals that would further the rebuilding effort of head coach Chris Ash.
