Eastern Michigan basketball is 4-1 on the season, with its only loss being a blowout at No. 1 Duke. There is no shame in that, but there is shame to be had in tonight's first half performance at Rutgers.

While their records under Steve Pikiell haven't been great, Rutgers has played consistently stout defense in his two-plus seasons at the helm. In the first 20 minutes of tonight's game, the Scarlet Knights gave up four points to Eastern Michigan.

Four. As in 2+2=4, which is all you need to do to calculate how many points the Eagles scored at halftime.

EMU shot 2-for-25 from the field in the first half, including 0-for-5 from three-point range. Oh, for good measure, they also missed all seven of their free throw attempts and turned the ball over 13 times.

All of that adds up to the lowest scoring total in a first half since the shot clock was introduced in 1986. The previous low was five.

Eastern Michigan will no doubt wake up a little in the second half--it would be hard not to--but this is going to be one night the Eagles are going to want to forget.

For Rutgers, this should be a defensive outing to build on as the team moves to 3-1 on the season.
