Awful news broke earlier Tuesday when it was reported a college football player died during team workouts this afternoon. He reportedly collapsed and could not be resuscitated by those who tended to him.

University of Maine freshman Darius Minor never suited up in a Black Bears uniform. He was 18.

According to the university, Minor collapsed at 1:15 p.m. ET.

School president Dr. Joan Ferrini-Mundy released a statement about Minor's passing.

Via UMaine:

“Darius was one of 17 first-year student-athletes taking part in the three-week Freshman Workout. He collapsed on the field at approximately 1:15 p.m. Campus athletics training staff and local first responders were unable to resuscitate him.”

The temperature in the area was in the low 80s during Tuesday’s workout, however, the humidity levels were high. Minor was enrolled in Summer Session at UMaine and reportedly intended to pursue a major in political science.

Our thoughts go out to the family, the Maine football community, and everyone affected.
