In every sport there are always coaches on the hot seat at the midway point of the season. For college football, it appears there are a handful of head coaches that could lose their job in the coming months.
One major head coach, Rutgers’ Chris Ash, has already lost his job. The Scarlet Knights fired him earlier in the year. Who could be next?
Power Five programs that are struggling through the first two months of the season certainly won’t hesitate to make a coaching change. This includes the USC Trojans.
Clay Helton has led USC to a few notable wins this year, but the Trojans own just a 3-3 record.
Ralph D. Russo of the Associated Press revealed his list for five coaches on the hot seat. All five candidates are coaching a notable program.
Here are the five coaches on the hot seat:
- Clay Helton, USC
- Lovie Smith, Illinois
- Charlie Strong, South Florida
- Derek Mason, Vanderbilt
- Steve Addazio, Boston College
The biggest name on this list is Helton because of the team he coaches. USC is an appealing job due to the location and ability to recruit talent.
Lovie Smith is an intriguing name on Russo’s list. Illinois thought he’d turn the program around, but the reality is his team continues to remain toward the bottom of the Big Ten.
Perhaps the most surprising name on the list is Steve Addazio. His tenure with Boston College has been fairly productive, however, the team has struggled this year against inferior opponents.
Who’s your pick for the next in-season firing?
