Division II Football Player Anthony Herbert Dies After Suffering Medical Emergency

A 20-year-old Division II football player died earlier today after suffering a medical emergency in his dorm room.

Anthony Herbert, an offensive lineman for Northern Michigan University, passed away on Tuesday. According to, Herbert participated in an early morning workout with teammates before heading off to breakfast.

After breakfast, he returned to his dorm room and suffered a medical emergency. Paramedics were called but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.

All across Twitter, tributes for Herbert began pouring in this afternoon.

A redshirt freshman, Herbert played in all 11 games this season as the team's starting left guard. He was also named to the all-GLIAC academic team.
