AP Voter Who Ranked Michigan Ahead Of Ohio State Explains Why He Did It

One AP voter has Michigan ranked ahead of Ohio State.

Of the 61 people who submit top 25 ballots for the AP Poll, 60 had Ohio State (No. 2 in the latest poll) ranked ahead of Michigan (ranked No. 5 in the latest poll). The 11-1 Buckeyes beat the 10-2 Wolverines in double-overtime in Columbus on Saturday, after all.

The one person who didn't?

Tom Murphy of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He ranked Michigan No. 3 and Ohio State No. 5. He explains why below.

Yes, I voted Michigan higher than Ohio State. The Wolverines essentially outplayed their arch rival on the road and I don't think the football reached the necessary 15-yard line on J.T. Barrett's fourth-down run in double overtime. As that was the game-decided play, I appointed myself as the replay official and deemed Michigan the winner. Now, if only the College Football Playoff selection committee would do the same.

This was his full top 10:

  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Michigan
  4. Washington
  5. Ohio State
  6. Wisconsin
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Penn State
  9. Colorado
  10. Oklahoma State

He's facing some criticism - especially from Ohio State fans - but this is why the AP Poll takes ballots from 61 different voters and not just one person. There are, occasionally, going to be some big outliers.
