Here's why the selection committee went with the Crimson Tide.
To the surprise of a lot of the college football world, the College Football Playoff selection committee went with Alabama over Ohio State for the final spot in the top four.
The Crimson Tide have one less loss (11-1 to 11-2) but the Buckeyes had the conference championship and better wins.
College Football Playoff selection committee chair Kirby Hocutt appeared on ESPN shortly after the rankings were released and explained why they went with Alabama.
"The committee has continued to be impressed with Alabama," he said.
Really, though, it came down to one thing - Ohio State's blowout loss to Iowa. If that didn't happen - or even if that had been just a 3 or 7-point loss - the Buckeyes might be in.
"More damaging was the 31-point loss to unranked Iowa,” he said.
Alabama is set to meet Clemson in the College Football Playoff Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. The Buckeyes will learn their bowl fate soon.
