ESPN’s College GameDay is in Ames, Iowa on the campus of Iowa State for the first time in show history. As a result, college football fans across the country are learning all about the big in-state rivalry the team has with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
The Iowa vs. Iowa State series, one of the most entertaining in the country, doesn’t get a lot of attention outside of the Midwest. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t one of the best there is.
Saturday morning, ESPN did a four-minute feature on the rivalry. It includes some information about the early years, how the rivalry fell off for decades and the origin of the Cy-Hawk Trophy.
It’s a must-watch for fans of both sides.
This year, Iowa is a slim two-point favorite on the road. Both programs are expected to have solid seasons.
As for the rivalry, Iowa leads the all-time series 44-22. They’ve also won the last four matchups between the two schools.
This year’s contest will kick off at 4:00 PM ET and it will be broadcast on FS1. This one feels a little bigger than prior years.
