We have another college football preseason top 25 poll. This one comes via Bill Connelly of SB Nation, which publishes the S&P ratings.
Connelly uses three things to make up his ratings:
- Recruiting rankings
- Returning production
- Recent history
You can view the full explanation for the model here.
Here’s the top 25:
- Ohio State
- Mississippi State
- Notre Dame
- Texas A&M
- Penn State
- South Carolina
- Oklahoma State
- Michigan State
- Boise State
The most-notable aspect of this list, arguably, is that Clemson is not No. 1 or No. 2. The Tigers are the reigning national champions, coming off a blowout win over Alabama, and will likely be the preseason No. 1 in the official top 25 polls.
Alabama and Georgia are weighed more favorably in this rating system, though, mostly due to the recruiting rankings and the returning production aspect.
Auburn and LSU are two other teams that are ranked higher in this model than they’ll likely be in the official preseason top 25s.
You can view the full S&P ratings, which rank every team in the country, here.
