The Buckeyes are a "pretender," but maybe only for the moment.
Ohio State is ranked No. 9 in the latest Coaches' Poll top 25 and remains close to the top of Vegas' national title odds.
Are the Buckeyes a "contender" or a "pretender," though?
Trevor Matich is going with the latter.
The ESPN college football analyst said on SportsCenter this morning that Urban Meyer's squad is a "pretender." He had one reason for that pick, too - the vertical passing game.
Matich said he likes what he's seen from the Buckeyes since the loss to Oklahoma, but needs to see OSU get it done vertically against a good defense.
"I have great confidence in Urban Meyer and his staff...but to be a true contender, they have to add the vertical passing game," Matich said.
Ohio State is set to play at Rutgers this weekend. The Buckeyes' next big test comes in late October against Penn State.
