Another former player from Florida’s 2007 college football team has reportedly been charged with murder.
Tony Joiner, a team captain for the Gators and a former teammate of Aaron Hernandez, has reportedly been charged with the second-degree murder of his wife in 2016. The case had gone unsolved for three years after Heyzel Obando was found dead in an apartment complex on Valentine’s Day 2016.
The former Gators standout was a safety and team captain for Urban Meyer’s team in 2007.
The News-Press first reported the news of his arrest:
Joiner was arrested Saturday in Lakes Wales, authorities said. He faces second-degree murder charges in the death of Obando, who was 26 at the time.
Joiner was being held in the Polk County Jail on Saturday afternoon. He will be transferred to the Lee County Jail.
Joiner played for Florida from 2004-07. He was arrested prior to the Gators’ game against No. 1 LSU after allegedly breaking into an impound lot where his girlfriend’s car was being held.
The former Gators standout was a part of the national title team in 2006. Florida won another national championship in 2008.
