A former Notre Dame Fighting Irish running back has died at the age of 27, according to reports out of South Bend today.
George Atkinson III, a member of Notre Dame’s 2011 recruiting class, has died, according to Pete Sampson of The Athletic.
The former Fighting Irish running back’s twin brother, Josh, who also played for Notre Dame, died in January.
“Atkinson III has been dealing with depression since the death of his twin brother Josh roughly one year ago,” Sampson reported.

Atkinson was a special teams star in South Bend, returning multiple kicks for touchdowns. He played in five games for the Raiders in 2014.
Several of the running back’s teammates took to Twitter to pay their respects.
In sophomore camp I roomed with George and he helped me a lot learning the playbook and just encouraged me to get out there and show what I could do. Thanks bro, Rest up and keep looking after us with Josh, GB, & Kona.🙏🏾 pic.twitter.com/ImNaRnjK8Q
