Four-star defensive tackle Hakeem Beamon committed to North Carolina back on June 18, 2017 after attending a Tar Heels camp. He backed away from that commitment on Monday.

Beamon announced the decision via Twitter that afternoon. Here is his explanation:

Beamon went into more detail about the decision in speaking to Rivals' Adam Friedman. From his piece:

"Decommitting has been on my mind for a long time," Beamon said. "Communication played a big part. I was going to do it on spring break but it's been on my mind for the past couple weeks so I figured I might as well do it today.

Things are back open for the four-star lineman. However, he does have a group of four schools that currently stands out.

"I'm going to do some camps and visit some schools," he said. "I'll be at Ohio State for a spring practice on April 1st. I think I'll also be at Alabama for a camp and their spring game on April 21st. These are unofficial visits.

"I'd say that Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, and South Carolina are my top four right now," said Beamon. "Ohio State has a great track record with their outside linebackers and defensive ends, especially with coach Larry Johnson. I just want to meet him, some of the players, and ask them some questions.

Hakeem Beamon is one of the top players out of Virginia.

The Chesterfield native is ranked No. 7 in the state by 247Sports' composite rankings. Rivals has him No. 8 in the state.

247 ranks him No. 318 in the class of 2019 overall. He's the 20th-ranked defensive tackle.

There are only two early predictions at 247's crystal ball, both to Virginia Tech. The Hokies, along with Penn State, are listed by Friedman as schools that will likely be involved in this recruitment down the stretch here, but Beamon doesn't mention either within that top group himself.
