Heather Dinich: There Are Only 14 Teams That Can Win The College Football Playoff

Heather Dinich breaking down the College Football Playoff.

College football is a top-heavy sport, and in any given year, there are only a dozen or so teams that actually have the talent to win the national title. The sport, at the moment, is dominated by a handful of programs - Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma etc. This year, ESPN's Heather Dinich says that there are realistically 14 teams that could win it all.

Dinich says that according to ESPN Analytics research, there are 19 teams that have at least a 1 percent change of reaching the College Football Playoff. Of those 19, 14 have at least a 1% chance of winning it all. It's fair to say that you won't see any programs on here that haven't had a great deal of success in the recruiting department.

The team with the best chance to win it all is Clemson - which has reached the College Football Playoff three years in a row and won it all two years ago. Last year, the Tigers were bounced by Alabama in the semifinal.

Here's the entire list, via ESPN. If your team isn't on here, well, you probably knew it wouldn't be.

  1. Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Georgia
  4. Notre Dame
  5. Washington
  6. Ohio State
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Penn State
  9. Auburn
  10. Michigan State
  11. Wisconsin
  12. Michigan
  13. Miami
  14. Stanford

Texas, Mississippi State, USC, Oklahoma State and Florida State also have a chance to make the Playoff, but not win it.

College football season officially kicked off last Saturday, but it really gets going this weekend. Here's to hoping there's some parity this year.
