The Fighting Illini are making a quarterback change.

Illinois is making a quarterback change.

The Fighting Illini announced on Monday that Chayce Crouch has been benched and is now No. 3 on the team's depth chart.

Jeff George Jr., the son of the former NFL quarterback, is now the team's starter. Freshman Cam Thomas is now No. 2.

The offense was rough under Couch, racking up just 161.3 passing yards a game and ranking 114th in the country in scoring at 18.3 points per game.

“There’s a lot of things we’re not doing right,” Lovie Smith said Monday. “To take the next step, we do need to make that change.”

George, a redshirt sophomore, was a two-star recruit in the 2014 class.

Illinois is set to play Iowa this Saturday.
