Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield went viral this past Saturday night after he shotgunned a beer at an Indians game on the jumbotron. In the time since, a number of FOX Sports personalities have criticized him for the move.
Colin Cowherd, obviously, took a shot at Mayfield. Now, Jason Whitlock has as well.
The Speak For Yourself host compared Mayfield to a character in the 1977 movie Smokey and the Bandit, suggesting that the Browns signal-caller is “endangering” his team moving forward. Whitlock calls Mayfield “Little Smokey” throughout the segment.
Here’s a portion of the rant:
“If I’m Browns general manager John Dorsey, first-time head coach Freddie Kitchens or Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, I’m quite concerned. It’s hard as hell to control a fire. The winds can change direction and the fire that has Baker Mayfield cooking could turn and engulf the rest of the team.
Plus, you have to fight wildfire with fire. Odell Beckham Jr. loves attention too. He doesn’t enjoy the smoke the way that Mayfield does. But if that’s the way to draw attention in Cleveland, OBJ is going to join the fire fight.
Little Smokey is the wildest thing we’ve seen at quarterback in the NFL since Brett Favre was pill-popping and raising hell in Green Bay.”

Mayfield has restored hope for Browns fans, which is saying a lot. If he’s able to have a successful second year and lead the franchise to the playoffs, we’ll imagine his critics will have less to point at next offseason.
