LSU quarterback Joe Burrow entered his team’s game against Alabama as one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in December. It’s now his award to lose.
Burrow lit up Alabama’s secondary on Saturday night, finishing 31-of-39 for 393 yards and three touchdowns. More importantly, the Tigers scored an incredibly huge road win against the Crimson Tide.
His counterpart, Tua Tagovailoa, played courageously in a losing effort. But Tagovailoa’s Heisman campaign is probably over after the result.
Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts and Ohio State signal-caller Justin Fields may still have a shot, but neither will have the opportunity to score this kind of signature win. Chase Young is also now out of the picture after his suspension.
It’s fair to say that Heisman odds will now favor Burrow tremendously after the game.

Burrow, who transferred from Ohio State to LSU ahead of last season, has turned the Tigers into an offensive juggernaut. Heading into the Alabama game, he’d thrown for 2,805 yards and 30 touchdowns with just four interceptions.
LSU still has Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M before a potential meeting with Georgia in the SEC title game. If the Tigers can run the table, it seems like a slam dunk that he’ll win the Heisman Trophy.
