The head coaching search at Texas A&M is over, as the school has hired former Duke head coach and ex-A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko to replace Jimbo Fisher.

The Aggies are hoping that Elko will be able to elevate the program to the level of a national contender, and the school consulted several former players before deciding on its new head coach.

One of the former players to weigh in on the head coaching search was Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.

A&M athletic director Ross Bjork says Manziel was adamant about one aspect of the search for a new head coach.

"Johnny Manziel’s the one that said we need to be an intimidating bully," said Bjork.

“He actually had another adjective. I can’t say that, but he said, that’s what we got to be. And I’m like, ‘Okay, that’s pretty powerful coming from an offensive guy.’ So, it just matched all the things that you’re seeing unfold here in the last couple of hours with Coach Elko.”

Manziel is one of only two players in Texas A&M history to win the Heisman, making him a legendary figure in College Station.

The Aggies are hoping that Elko can establish them as contenders in the new SEC as Texas and Oklahoma are set to join the conference.
