Kevin Sumlin Is Getting Crushed For What He's Doing At Houston Today

Kevin Sumlin and Khalil Tate seemed like a dream pairing on paper. Arizona's new head coach had a ridiculous offense at Texas A&M with Johnny Manziel, and Tate is the kind of electric dual-threat quarterback who can do similar things.

So far, though, Sumlin's Arizona offense has been brutal. The Wildcats' lost their season opener to BYU and Tate rarely showcased his running ability.

This afternoon, Arizona is taking on Houston, and the Wildcats are getting blown out.

It's Houston 24, Arizona 0 in the second quarter.

Sumlin is getting crushed.

"Kevin Sumlin and Noel Mazzone with another baffling offensive plan. Tate has just three rushes (-5), and that pitch on fourth-and-short was out of horrific play call central casting. Just a gross effort by Arizona today," Pete Thamel tweeted.

"One game and one quarter into the season and Arizona under Kevin Sumlin looks like a big bag of ass so far," tweeted another college football analyst.

And Tate appears to be playing hurt. From tuscon.com:

Making matters worse: UA quarterback Khalil Tate appeared to injure his left ankle or calf. On a second-and-5 play, Tate went down without being touched. A trainer applied extensive tape to his lower left leg, and Tate didn’t appear to be his usual mobile self afterward.

Kevin Sumlin had said before this afternoon's game that the Wildcats had planned on "turning Tate loose," but that doesn't appear to be happening (or possible, with his injury).

Arizona and Houston are playing on ABC/ESPN2.
