South Carolina just knocked off Georgia in easily the biggest upset of the 2019 college football season. In the aftermath, Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart is getting crushed for two decisions down the stretch.
The first questionable decision came with eight seconds left in regulation. Georgia, facing a 3rd-and-5 on South Carolina’s 38-yard-line, opted to run one more play rather than line up for a potential game-winning field goal.
The play ended as an incomplete pass, but Georgia was called for an illegal shift – a five-yard penalty. The penalty knocked the Bulldogs out of field goal range. The final play was another incomplete pass from Fromm.
The second decision fans are upset with came in double-overtime. South Carolina, facing a 4th-and-1 from Georgia’s 16-yard-line, looked confused on offense with the play clock winding down just before the snap. Smart, who must not have liked the way his defense was lined up, called timeout. The decision gave South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp time to draw up a better play. They converted and later kicked what would be the winning field goal on the drive.
Smart is getting it from all angles on social media after the loss.
The only thing dumber than Will Muschamp’s decision to kick…Kirby Smart’s decision to keep running plays and end up out of Field Goal range

Kirby Smart didn’t let Rodrigo Blankenship try for the win from 55.

Kirby Smart just called a time out with South Carolina about to get a delay of game. What is this?

I love Kirby Smart but he leaves me scratching my head quite often.

Even with the loss, Georgia’s season isn’t over. If the Bulldogs can run the table and knock off Alabama or LSU in the SEC title game, they’ll have a good claim at the College Football Playoff. But it looks like they have plenty of issues to fix on offense if that’s going to happen.
