Week 8 of the college football season is in the books, and ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit has released his new top six.

For Herbie and everyone else who follows the sport. it is time to start seriously thinking about the College Football Playoff. The first CFP rankings will be out in a couple of weeks.

As you probably know, four teams make the field. Every week, Herbstreit releases his top four teams with two on standby waiting to break in.

This week, his top four in order is Ohio State, LSU, Alabama and Clemson. Oklahoma and Penn State are next in line.

The most "controversial" thing Herbstreit did here is put Clemson in his top four. The Tigers have been a polarizing team all season.

Clemson is undefeated and the defending national champion, but they haven't played up to their billing. There has been heavy debate among college football fans and media about whether or not the Tigers deserve a playoff spot right now.

While Clemson might not be playing like a top four team, they will likely get one of the four playoff spots as long as they remain unbeaten. That leaves three spots up for grabs, with the SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 likely to claim one each.
