Kirk Herbstreit Was Asked If Two Teams From Same Conference Could Make Playoff
Could two teams from one conference make the playoff?
We're through seven weeks of the college football season, and we're beginning to get a clearer picture of the legitimate contenders for the playoff.
One of the biggest questions being floated around the college football community revolves around two teams from one conference making the playoff. Is it possible?
On its Week 8 Top 25 recap show, Herbstreit was asked that question.
Here's his response, via 247Sports.
"I just can not imagine a scenario where the committee is willing to put two from one conference in. Georgia looks great right now. Alabama does too. You talk about their schedule. Jalen Hurts is only getting better and more comfortable with Brian Daboll in their scheme. I just can’t envision those two teams both getting in and two other Power conferences getting left out. It would have to be an incredible unique situation.
Even if they’re both deserving, its just hard for me to imagine the committee not recognizing and giving a Power 5 conference a chance to get into that playoff."
Herbstreit is probably right here, especially when you take into account last year's playoff foursome. Ohio State made the final four despite not winning the Big Ten, meanwhile Penn State missed out on the playoff even though the Nittany Lions won the Big Ten.
If those two teams don't both make it into the playoff, it's probably not going to happen for any other team.
