Houston will reportedly be looking for a new head coach.

The Cougars fired head coach Major Applewhite this morning, according to multiple college football insiders. SB Nation's Steven Godfrey first reported the news of the firing.

West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen - surprisingly - has been mentioned as a serious candidate for the position.

He's not the only big name being mentioned for the job, though.

Brett McMurphy is reporting that former Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury is a candidate for the position. Kingsbury took the USC offensive coordinator job earlier this month.

"Top candidates include Dana Holgorsen & Kliff Kingsbury, source said," he reports.

Holgorsen has ties to Houston's administration and is said to be a fan of the area, but would that be enough to get him to leave West Virginia?

Kingsbury, meanwhile, has only been at USC for a couple of weeks.

This will be a very interesting head coaching search to follow.
