Lovie Smith Comments On The Arrest Of 3 Of His Players

The Fighting Illini had three football players arrested today.

Three Illinois football players were arrested today on charges of home invasion and armed robbery.

The players - offensive linemen Darta Lee and Howard Watkins and athlete Zarrian Holcombe - allegedly attempted to rob a university dormitory early Wednesday morning. They were booked at a Champaign County Jail earlier today.

The trio is set to appear in court on Thursday.

Illinois head coach Lovie Smith released a statement to ESPN:

Statement from Illinois coach Lovie Smith on the three players arrested today: Darta Lee and Zarrian Holcombe were already suspended from team activities for violations of team rules, and will remain suspended. Howard Watkins has been suspended indefinitely from team activities. These allegations, if true, fail to live up to the standards we expect of our student-athletes. We continue to gather information and will take appropriate steps based upon what we learn.

Illinois opens its season Sept. 2 against Ball State.
